Mukhisa Kituyi

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has asked former Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi to appear before it over claims he made about fake degrees at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

This follows remarks Kituyi made during a radio interview at the end of March, where he raised concerns about what he said was happening during a graduation at the university.

According to him, some names on the graduation list belonged to people who had never even studied there.

He claimed that he had identified the problem through a family member who was about to graduate, and also noted that he was prepared to prove his allegations.

The matter has now caught the attention of CUE, which regulates universities in the country.

According to the commission, they had attempted writing to Mr. Kituyi two weeks ago, but they did not receive any feedback from him. They have now requested for him to come to their offices in Gigiri from April 20th to April 24th, and give his explanation on the allegation.

But as all this is going on, MMUST has come out to defend itself.

The university says its graduation process is clear and follows strict steps. It says a student must be admitted, attend classes, sit exams and be approved before being allowed to graduate.

MMUST insists that no one can just appear on a graduation list without going through that process.

The claims have now raised questions, and many people will be waiting to see what comes out of the investigation in the coming days.
