The suspect accused of shooting and killing a General Service Unit (GSU) officer with an arrow along State House is to be detained in police custody for 14 days as investigations continue.
Kithuka Kimunyi was yesterday, Tuesday, October 14, arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts a day after the drama led to Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka’s death.
Prosecutors had asked for 21 days of remand to allow proper investigation but the magistrate reduced it to 14 days.
Early information is that Kithuka had travelled from Makueni County to Nairobi on Sunday evening, a number of hours prior to the attack on Monday morning.
Kithuka was weak and limp when he was taken to court to appear before the magistrate and asked the magistrate to take him to hospital.
The deadly attack took place around 8:10 a.m. on Monday near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road.
The attacker had gone to the gate with bow and arrows, and refused several orders to stop, police officers added.
He allegedly then shot an arrow that struck Constable Mattanka in the ribs. The officer was hurried to the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he died during treatment. His body was taken to the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
The murder was denounced, and NPS spokesman Muchiri Njaga termed it as a barbaric act.
The National Police Service condemns this atrocious act and commends the officers for their quick action in rescuing more people,” he said.
The reason behind the attack and whether the two men were acquainted before the attack are still to be determined by the police.
