Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s top security has been withdrawn.

The withdrawal occurred immediately after the Senate overwhelmingly voted to uphold his impeachment by the National Assembly.

TUKIO.co.ke has learned that Gachagua has only been left with basic close protection.

He is also expected to vacate the official residence of the deputy president in Karen immediately.

After his impeachment, the Senate published a gazette notice officially announcing his removal from office.

In the notice by Speaker Amason Kingi, the Senate listed the five grounds on which Gachagua was impeached, which include gross violation of Article 160 (1) of the Constitution on the institutional and decisional independence of judges.

Another charge is gross violation of Articles 10 (2) (a), (b) and (c); 27 (4), 73 (1) (a) and (2) (b); 75 (1) (c), and 129 (2) of the Constitution and Article 147 (1), as read together with Article 131 (2) (c) and (d) of the Constitution.

Gachagua’s office is, as a result, vacant and President William Ruto is expected to nominate another deputy within 14 days.
