Former Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) Director General Philemon Kandie was on Friday night arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in a dramatic raid at his home.
EACC detectives stormed the residence on October 3, whisking Kandie away to Integrity Centre for questioning. Officers also seized several documents and electronic devices believed to be key to ongoing investigations.
While the anti-graft agency has not disclosed the exact charges, preliminary reports suggest the arrest is tied to allegations of graft and financial impropriety during Kandie’s tenure at KeRRA.
Kandie resigned from the roads authority on July 11, two years before his term was set to lapse. His departure came amid growing pressure, including a High Court petition filed on July 2 seeking his removal.
The petition accused him of misusing public funds and channeling resources through shell contractors allegedly linked to unrest during the June 25 nationwide protests.
In his resignation letter, Kandie simply cited personal reasons, noting he would proceed on annual leave before formally exiting office in October. The timing, however, fueled speculation that he was bowing out under pressure.
Kandie has since been replaced in an acting capacity by Jackson Magondu, the former Director of Planning, Design and Environment at KeRRA.
EACC is expected to provide further details on the charges once investigations are concluded.
