Tension and grief engulfed Olkalou town on Sunday after a well-known boiled eggs vendor, identified as Maureen, was found brutally murdered in her home under chilling circumstances.
Maureen, a mother of three, was discovered lying in a pool of blood inside her house, following a suspected attack carried out during a heavy downpour.
Neighbours say the assailant likely used the cover of rain to commit the heinous crime without detection, as no screams or commotion were heard.
According to eyewitnesses, concern grew when residents noticed Maureen’s door ajar and a trail of blood leading from her house. Upon entering the home, they were met with a horrifying scene, her lifeless body on the floor, showing signs of a violent struggle.
A blood-stained knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was later found discarded near the fence of her compound.
The gruesome killing has sparked outrage across Nyandarua County, with human rights defenders calling for swift justice and greater protection for women. This is not just a personal tragedy; it’s a community crisis. We are witnessing a disturbing trend of gender-based violence. Maureen’s death cannot be another statistic.” said Betty Muchina, a prominent Nyandarua-based human rights advocate
Maureen’s murder adds to a growing list of unresolved killings targeting women in the county, raising alarm over what activists describe as a wave of femicide and systemic inaction.
Local authorities, led by Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa and Police Commander Stella Cherono, have launched investigations and are urging residents to share any leads that may help bring the perpetrator to justice.“We condemn this act in the strongest terms. We are committed to ensuring the perpetrator is apprehended swiftly and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” said Jaldesa.
Maureen’s family, friends, and customers are left reeling, as the community grapples with yet another life lost to gender-based violence.
