Elias Kemboi Korir, a key official of the Women and Youth Against Aids and Poverty (WAYAAP) NGO, was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while attempting to flee the country.

Korir, who has been on police radar for numerous fraudulent schemes targeting businesses, is accused of orchestrating a multimillion-shilling scam under the guise of charity work.

As an official of WAYAAP, an organization claiming to support vulnerable communities, Korir allegedly lured individuals and companies with fake tender offers.

Once the targeted businesses delivered the goods, the items were instead sold in local markets, and the NGO’s officials became untraceable.

One prominent case involved Korir and his accomplice, Halima Samson Mwongela, also an official at WAYAAP. The two allegedly defrauded three suppliers of goods valued at Sh32.8 million, purportedly meant for aid distribution.

After receiving the goods, the officials disappeared, leaving suppliers with no payment or recourse.

When the affected businesses attempted recovery, they were met with intimidation and resistance, prompting them to report the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DCI’s Operation Support Unit launched a manhunt for Korir and his accomplices, who had gone into hiding. However, Korir’s escape plan was thwarted earlier today when detectives apprehended him at JKIA.

The suspect is set to appear at the Milimani Law Courts tomorrow. Authorities are urging other victims of the rogue NGO to contact DCI Headquarters for assistance.
