Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda has raised the alarm over ongoing demolitions in Korando-Tiengre and other areas of Kisumu County, questioning their legality and the impact on affected residents.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, Ojienda urged the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing to explain the legal basis under which the demolitions are being carried out by the national government, purportedly to pave the way for road expansion.

“The Roads Committee must elucidate the entities or agencies involved in executing these demolitions and whether they are acting under a formal directive or legal mandate,” said the senator.

Ojienda pressed for clarity on whether notices were issued to residents before demolitions began and whether there was any form of public participation, as required by the Constitution.

He also demanded answers on the status of the land—whether public, private, or community-owned—and if any compensation or resettlement plans are in place for those affected.

The Kisumu legislator described the demolitions as disruptive and called for humane and lawful handling of development projects.

In a separate statement, Ojienda also sought a Senate investigation into the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in marginalized counties. Speaking before the Standing Committee on Education, he raised concerns over the adequacy of infrastructure, teacher preparedness, and availability of learning materials in under-resourced regions.

“Our schools in marginalized areas face many challenges in implementing CBC, especially regarding teacher training and access to CBC-compliant resources,” Ojienda said.

He emphasized the need for inclusive education, calling on the government to prioritize access for girls, children with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups. Ojienda urged the Education Committee to assess how the government is supporting schools and teachers to ensure that CBC meets its goals nationwide.
