The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani is undergoing a major transformation aimed at restoring the iconic facility to world-class standards ahead of major international sporting events.

Principal Secretary for Interior Raymond Omollo said the stadium, built in 1987 under Kenya’s second President Daniel arap Moi, had over the decades become an important sporting landmark but required significant upgrades to match Kenya’s growing sporting ambitions.

The rehabilitation is being undertaken under the oversight of the Ministry of Defence and Sports Kenya, with the facility targeted to accommodate 60,000 spectators and meet FIFA and CAF standards ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The ongoing works follow an earlier rehabilitation undertaken ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The upgrades include a new hybrid Bermuda-grass pitch, an advanced drainage system and a spectator canopy that is 99 percent complete. Seating has been replaced, while VIP and VVIP lounges have also been upgraded.

The stadium will further feature 2,000-lux floodlighting, animation screens, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) facilities, modern changing rooms and automated ticketing.

Upgraded media facilities and two rehabilitated training grounds are also part of the project.
The State Department for Internal Security will support security and coordination to ensure Kasarani operates as a safe international venue.
