Salient Secondary School in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua county, is set to be closed and repurposed to host the county’s first-ever university. The move, which follows overwhelming support from local residents, is expected to transform the region both academically and economically.
The decision was reached after a public participation forum, where residents agreed to the bold step in pursuit of higher learning opportunities closer to home.
Nyandarua Governor Moses Badilisha, confirmed the transition during a community engagement forum in Ol Kalou, saying that the first cohort of 300 university students will be admitted this September at the former school grounds.
Another 300 students will report to the Ol Jororok Agricultural Training Center, which has already been renovated to host part of the new institution’s operations.
The university is being established in partnership with the University of Nairobi, and will operate as a constituent college in its formative stages. It will initially offer degree programs in Agriculture, Business Administration, and Education.
