Aden Duale on Thursday, Health Cabinet Secretary presided on Thursday over the the World Kidney Day national celebrations at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

He revealed the move via a statement on his social media

He said the move is part of the Kenya Kwanza broader Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

The event was held under the theme, ‘Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,’ highlighting the urgent need for early screening and preventive measures

“The disease affects nearly 3.1 million Kenyans and is largely driven by diabetes and hypertension. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) account for 43% of deaths in the country, ,’Statement read.

He added that the Ministry is shifting focus from reactive treatment to community-based preventive care, leveraging Community Health Promoters (CHPs) for early detection of high blood pressure and blood sugar.

“Under the Social Health Authority (SHA), over Ksh 104 billion in claims have been processed to cover dialysis, nephrectomy and kidney transplants, including access to transplant services at Aga Khan Hospital through public-private partnerships, “he said.

He added that to ensure ensure safe and ethical organ donation, a National Transplant Registry is being established following last year’s transplant concerns.

Duale said that specialist training is expanding through the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology, while modern renal units are being deployed across counties.
