As Kenya nears the 2027 elections, President William Ruto faces growing political pressure in Mt. Kenya. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua are forming a strong alliance to challenge his control. Ruto, however, has a strategy to counter this political wave.
One key tactic is challenging Gachagua’s influence. While Gachagua seeks to unite Mt. Kenya under one bloc, Ruto is engaging sidelined leaders and recently reshuffled his cabinet to empower Mt. Kenya politicians.
A senior leader noted, “Ruto is balancing power to prevent any one leader from dominating Mt. Kenya.”
To counter Kalonzo Musyoka’s rising popularity in the region, Ruto is reaching out to Ukambani leaders, preventing Kalonzo from using Mt. Kenya as a stepping stone for national influence.

Meanwhile, Martha Karua has criticized Ruto for neglecting Mt. Kenya despite the region’s role in his 2022 victory. In response, Ruto has frequently visited the area, launching key projects such as road upgrades, water programs, and youth empowerment initiatives.
He has also gained backing from figures like Governor Mutahi Kahiga and religious leaders to counter Karua’s narrative.
Ruto is also strengthening grassroots mobilization by deploying governors and MPs to advance his development agenda.

“The president has shown commitment by ensuring Mt. Kenya’s projects continue,” said Governor Anne Waiguru.
His recent visit to former President Uhuru Kenyatta further signaled efforts to solidify his position, followed by the reappointment of Mt. Kenya leaders to key cabinet roles.
Analysts see Ruto’s strategy as a divide-and-rule approach, preventing a strong opposition from emerging.
As 2027 approaches, the battle for Mt. Kenya remains a decisive factor in shaping Kenya’s political future.
Will Ruto’s tactics work, or will the new alliance shift the balance of power?
