President William Ruto has called Africa’s exclusion from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) “unacceptable and indefensible,” urging African leaders to unite in pushing for fair representation.
Speaking during the 7th Summit of the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government on UN Security Council Reform at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, convened by Sierra Leone, Ruto said the time had come to correct what he termed a “historic injustice.”
“Africa’s exclusion from the Security Council is indefensible. We must correct this injustice to make the UN fit for purpose,” President Ruto declared.
He emphasized the need for African leaders to amplify the continent’s voice on global platforms and to defend the Common African Position on reform.
Kenya, he added, would continue to fully support the demand to ensure Africa’s place at the global decision-making table is no longer deferred.
Ruto also cautioned that as Africa presses for representation, it must prepare to shoulder the responsibilities of permanent membership, including establishing mechanisms to select its representatives.
