President William Ruto hosted a farewell meeting today for outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, at State House Nairobi.

Ambassador Whitman, who announced her resignation last week, reflected on her two-year tenure, describing it as an immense honour to serve as the representative of the United States while strengthening the partnership between the U.S. and Kenya.

“I leave Kenya filled with gratitude—thankful for my dedicated team, the opportunity to serve my country, and the warm friendship extended by the government and the people of this beautiful Republic of Kenya,” said the 68-year-old diplomat.

During her time in Kenya, Ambassador Whitman played a key role in advancing important reforms in the bilateral relationship, particularly in areas such as visa access and promoting tourism.

Her tenure is widely seen as a period of heightened engagement between the two nations.

As Whitman prepares to depart, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi will continue its operations under interim leadership until her successor is appointed.

President Ruto highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between Kenya and the United States, noting that the two countries have enjoyed 60 years of cooperation, grounded in shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and freedom.

“In the past two years, our relationship has reached new heights, particularly with Kenya being designated a Major Non-NATO Ally, a significant milestone in the history of our bilateral relations,” Ruto said.
