President William Ruto received a warm reception in Kisumu as he openly acknowledged support from his former rival, Raila Odinga.
Addressing a massive crowd in Kondele, the President emphasized the need for national unity, promising to work with Raila to foster cohesion.
“Raila and I agreed to work together. You know there was a time I helped Raila, and this time he has helped me. Why should anyone have a problem with that?” Ruto posed, as the crowd cheered.
This marks the first public admission of Raila’s support since the youth-led protests in June that nearly shook Ruto’s administration.
While refraining from naming individuals, Ruto criticized leaders promoting division and tribalism. “Those who promote hatred and tribalism will be shown the way to go home,” he stated, reiterating his commitment to a united Kenya.
Kondele, a region historically critical of Ruto, demonstrated its newfound solidarity as residents filled the streets to welcome the President. This marks the second time Ruto has received a hero’s welcome in Kisumu since forming a broad-based government.
Backing Raila’s AU Bid
Ruto pledged full support for Raila’s bid to chair the African Union Commission, assuring the crowd that he would rally the continent to back Raila’s candidature.
“Let us pray for his success as he seeks votes across the continent,” he said.
Development for All Kenyans
The President highlighted his administration’s agenda, focusing on inclusivity, economic development, and universal healthcare.
“This is a broad-based government. No Kenyan, no matter their background, will be left behind,” Ruto assured. He also outlined plans to reduce the cost of living through agricultural investment, promote affordable housing to create jobs, and ensure access to healthcare through Universal Health Coverage.
Ruto lauded the contribution of 108,000 Community Health Promoters, emphasizing their role in improving healthcare access.
