Tributes continue to pour in for Kenyan athletics legend and esteemed coach Peninah Talam, who passed away on Friday.

Among those honouring her was 2013 World 5000m silver medalist Mercy Cherono, who described Talam as a mother figure. “She was our sports mother and coach. It’s so sad that you’ve gone to be with the Lord. Rest in eternal peace, Madam Peninah,” Cherono said.

Talam had a long and distinguished coaching career with the National Police Service (NPS), retiring in 2023.

Her athletics journey began in the 1980s and early 90s when she competed in the women’s 800m.

She later transitioned into coaching, where she played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous athletes at both the local and international levels.

Ishmaili Amani, one of the athletes she mentored, credited Talam for much of his success.

“Rest in peace, my mentor, also my coach. I can’t believe you are no longer with us. I learned so many skills from you. Pole mama, may you rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Talam, the daughter of former athlete Talam Keter, contributed to Team Kenya’s success in various international assignments.

In 2004, she made history when she coached the men’s team to the World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

Under her guidance, Kenya finished second in the medal standings with two gold, four silver, and two bronze medals.

She also served as a chaperone at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Athletics Kenya (AK) paid tribute to Talam, calling her an immortal figure in the country’s athletics history.

“Her contributions to the sport will always be remembered, and Athletics Kenya extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her legacy,” the federation stated.
