The newly revamped Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County is set to be officially handed over to the County Government by May 15, ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for June 1.The stadium, which has been under rehabilitation by the National Government for the past two months, is on track to host over 10,000 people during the national event — the first of its kind in the lakeside county.

Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, who led an inspection tour of the facility, confirmed that construction is nearing completion, with the main 10,000-seater stand almost finalized.“The progress is impressive. We have received assurance from the contractor that the stadium will be ready for use by May 15, well ahead of the national celebrations,” said Dr. Omollo.

He was accompanied by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and other local leaders, who commended the National Government for supporting the timely completion of the venue.

Governor Wanga said the stadium will serve not only as a hub for the upcoming national event but also as a long-term catalyst for sports, tourism, and economic development in the region.“This is more than just a stadium — it is a symbol of pride and a foundation for economic transformation for our people,” she noted.

Governor Wanga further expressed hope that the Madaraka Day fete will bring national attention to pressing local issues, particularly the plight of fishermen in Lake Victoria. She cited insecurity and inadequate safety resources as key challenges facing the fishing community.“As we prepare for this historic celebration, I hope the government will use this platform to address the issues affecting our fishermen,” she said.

With the official handover date fast approaching, preparations are in top gear, with logistical and security planning expected to intensify in the coming weeks to ensure a successful national event.

Named in honor of veteran opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the stadium is poised to be the centerpiece of Kenya’s 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations — marking a proud moment for Homa Bay County.
