The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has publicly denounced what it terms a sustained smear campaign by the Standard Media Group targeting its leader, Raila Odinga, and extending to his family.
In an official statement released on May 5, 2025, ODM accused the Standard Newspapers of deliberately seeking to undermine and discredit Raila Odinga’s long-standing sacrifices, patriotism, and contributions to Kenya’s national development, which the party says have come at great personal risk to him and his family.
The party expressed concern over the impact of these negative media portrayals on its supporters, many of whom have voiced alarm and shock.
ODM assured its base that a comprehensive statement and guidance on how the party will handle its relationship with the Standard Group would be issued on May 6, 2025.
This development comes amid a broader context of tension between the Standard Group and various political actors, including government officials.
The Standard Group has faced government pushback, including suspension of advertising contracts, which some analysts link to its critical coverage of government projects and personalities. The media house’s critical stance has reportedly led to a crackdown by government agencies, further complicating the media landscape in Kenya.
