The government on Wednesday launched the 10th edition of the Kaptagat conservation programme, bringing together environmental stakeholders, government officials and partners to push for stronger efforts in restoring forests and protecting the environment.
Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno was among leaders who attended the launch event, which was held under the theme, “10 to 20: Restore. Sustain. Transform.”
The event was led by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and supported by Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.
While launching the project, most of the leaders and other conservation organizations present saw the need to recognize the efforts made so far in rehabilitating the Kaptagat ecosystem and empowering the communities surrounding the area.

In the past ten years since its inception, the Kaptagat project has developed into an effective conservation project which has been embraced by the government and community stakeholders as well as environmental and private organizations to help restore degraded lands and preserve the water towers.
According to the leadership present, it was stressed that there should be greater partnerships in working towards the preservation of the environment and fighting climate change.
This year’s theme seeks to intensify the restoration process over the coming 10 years and promoting sustainable utilization of natural resources and climate action as well.
The forum also attracted other leaders and conservation partners from different institutions including Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho, WWF UK Chief Executive Officer Tanya Steele, WWF Kenya CEO Jackson Kiplagat, Kenya Forest Service Chief Conservator Alex Lemarkoko and KEFRI CEO Dr. James Njuguna.
The stakeholders emphasized the importance of these projects in ensuring that forest cover is sustained and improved as well as enhancing water catchment areas and and assisting communities in benefiting from the conservation projects.
They also reiterated their commitment to continuing to support Kenya in its restoration and resilience-building initiatives in various regions within the country.
