Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has warned protesters to avoid protected areas during the June 25 demonstrations set to honour those who died in last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests.

Speaking in a brief press briefing on Tuesday, Kanja said police officers will act within the law to protect lives and property. He urged demonstrators to protest peacefully and not to provoke officers during the protests.

“We shall operate within the law. We call on those protesting to do so peacefully and not interfere with others or provoke the police,” said Kanja.

He was accompanied by DCI boss Amin Mohamed, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodoni, DIG APS Gilbert Masengeli, and Nairobi County Commander George Seda, among others. Kanja did not take any questions from journalists.

Nairobi County Police Commander George Seda had earlier said that police were ready to maintain order and ensure safety during the protests.

“We have a plan and will provide enough security to protect both participants and non-participants,” Seda said on June 18. “We received the official letter notifying us about the protests.”

Seda called for peaceful demonstrations, reminding Kenyans that June 25 is a working day and businesses will be open. “Let’s avoid violence. Once it turns chaotic, it beats the purpose of the protest and only makes things worse,” he said.
