One more time, President William Ruto has reiterated Africa’s call for more representation at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by demanding two permanent and two non-permanent seats for Africa.

While presenting the African Group of States at the ongoing Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar, the President argued that social development of the world cannot exist without social justice of the past and equal representation in global institutions such as the UN.

“Africa keeps paying for global unfairness while she is a major stakeholder in international peace and development. The time has come for the continent to get full representation and voice at the Security Council,” said Ruto.

The three-day summit that has attracted the world leaders, development experts, and policymakers is focusing on poverty reduction, decent work, and social inclusion as the key areas for the new global social agenda.\

President Ruto’s statement reflects the position of the African continent as per the Ezulwini Consensus which urges thorough reform of the UN system to guarantee fair representation and the share of the decision-making power for African countries.

The Doha summit is a follow-up to the global commitments made at the first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, with focus on social justice, inclusion, and sustainable ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌development.
