President William Ruto, together with his deputy Kithure Kindiki, on Tuesday, January 3, hosted Meru leaders at State House, Nairobi.
The leaders present include Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, 11 Members of Parliament, and 67 of the county’s 69 MCAs.
In a statement, President Ruto said their discussions centered on his government’s development agenda in Meru County, deliberating on ways of fast-tracking priority programmes and projects to drive growth and better livelihoods for the county’s people.
Among the key projects discussed is the long-overdue construction of the killer Nithi Bridge. A total of KSh 7 billion has been allocated to the project, and its construction works will begin in the coming days.
The upgrade of Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital to Level 6 was also on the agenda, with KSh 1 billion set aside for the project. The upgrade is slated to be completed this year.
President Ruto also mentioned the ongoing electricity connection in the county, targeting 30,000 households, the 17 modern markets and several affordable housing units that are coming up in the county.
On roads, the president noted that the construction of the 17km Meru Town Bypass will begin soon with KSh 3 billion allocated for the project. The bypass is aimed at decongesting Meru Town.
