Police officers from Central Police Station, Nairobi were compelled to discharge tear gas to separate University of Nairobi students who had taken to the streets to protest against the non-release of their April examination results.
The students who were demonstrating alleged that the university administration was playing games with their academic futures as they had been given contradictory responses by the officials whenever they sought clarification on the matter.
With graduation timelines ticking, the students voiced out that they were concerned that the delay could derail their graduation plans. The protesters blocked some parts of the bustling University Way, traffic came to a standstill and motorists were stuck for hours.
The students accompanied their slogans with placard-waving and promised to continue their demonstrations until their demands were met. Some of the students who were speaking at the time of the protests said that the Chancellor’s office should release accurate information regarding when the results will be out.
However, they cautioned that if a clear direction was not forthcoming, they would be compelled to escalate their demonstrations, declaring “aluta continua” – the fight goes on.
After police moved in to scatter the protesters, peace was regained, albeit with protesters at the university still anxious that an official statement from the administration would be forthcoming.
