Police Constable James Mukhwana is in custody after confessing to his role in the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’ at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 7, 2025.
In a statement to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Mukhwana claims he was ordered by OCS Talaam allegedly on instructions from Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to “discipline” Ojwang’ in custody using inmates.
Mukhwana says four detainees were paid and given alcohol to carry out the assault. Ojwang’ died hours later. The officer now says guilt compelled him to make a full confession after initially giving a false statement under pressure.
DIG Lagat has since stepped aside as investigations intensify.
