Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has finally become among the national referral hospitals in Kenya as it was upgraded to level 6A. The new status will see it be managed by the national government as opposed to previous control by the county government, meaning there will be a fresh start as far as offering healthcare services within western Kenya.
The ceremony, which was conducted under the supervision of the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, also marked the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Olang’o Onudi as the Non-Executive Board Chairperson, an important move that will help develop leadership and governance at the facility.
During the address at the function, the PS recognized the efforts made by the County Government but reiterated that the extent of change needed for compliance with national referral hospital standards requires intervention on the national front.
“It’s commendable that the County has made efforts to put up the facility; however, for it to offer global healthcare and offer specialized levels of medical expertise, it requires financial and planning support at the national level.”
It is anticipated that the transition will make a big impact on the hospital. The projects include infrastructural development, enhancing service delivery, as well as strengthening the hospital’s capacity with regard to infectious as well as non-communicable diseases.
According to the PS, it is an initiative by the government aimed at ensuring better health outcomes and transforming the health sector from below.
At the same time, he pointed out that because of its new status, there will be heightened responsibilities. “This is a time for displaying professionalism, discipline, and commitment. Achievement will be made on the basis of collective efforts, dedication, and an unending quest for betterment,” he added, as he assured that the necessary support will be ensured from the government for smooth running.
Not only that, but for patients and communities within and beyond Kisumu counties, an elevated JOOTRH will promise more than an upgrade within facilities indeed, it will promise better healthcare and an opportunity to deal with complications within health within their reach.
“This upgrade marks a big step forward, not only for our hospital but for the people we serve,” added the PS. “Our commitment is to build a modern, efficient, and high-performing facility that will address the health needs of the region.”
As national oversight begins, JOOTRH is poised to become a center of excellence for specialty health services, medical and health training, and research as it continues to be the cornerstone of health services within western Kenya.
