Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has called out some Kenyans linking the police to the recent alleged abductions of the supposed government critics.
In the last four days, at least five young people have disappeared, with some quarters claiming they were abducted by people in uniforms believed to be police officers.
However, IG Kanja regretted the linkage, saying the members of the National Police Service, in strict adherence to their standing orders, do not abduct people, and so none of his juniors is involved in the supposed abductions.
"We therefore appeal to the public to refrain from spreading false, fabricated, malicious, distasteful, misinformed and unverified information aimed at tarnishing the reputation and image of the National Police Service," said Kanja.
The IG confirmed that no police station in the country is holding any of the reported abductees.
He appealed to anybody with relevant information about any missing person to report to the nearest police station.
