Kenya’s sporting fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of volleyball star Janet Wanja.
Wanja, a former national women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers player, tragically succumbed to gallbladder cancer while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Her death was announced by her brother Kevin Kimani on the morning of Friday, December 27.
The volleyball legend fell ill in August shortly after returning from the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she served as the Malkia Strikers’ fitness trainer.
Wanja first represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
She was part of the team that won Kenya’s seventh continental title in 2007 on home soil, where she was named the best setter.
Before her diagnosis, she was the gym instructor for the Kenya Pipeline volleyball club.
