The Kenya Pipeline has confirmed it will foot 100% of the medical bills incurred by ailing volleyball star Janet Wanja.
Wanja, a former national women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers player, was sadly diagnosed with gallbladder cancer and has commenced treatment.
After the news of her diagnosis went viral, some people came out to fundraise for her medical expenses, releasing a pay bill number for well-wishers to channel their contributions.
However, the Kenya Pipeline’s HR manager in charge of Medical Services, Flora Sumbeiywo, clarified that the company will pay Wanja’s medical bills in full, saying there is no need for a medical appeal.
Wanja’s family also distanced itself from the appeal, saying they have no knowledge about it.
As earlier reported, her brother, Kelvin Kimani, a midfielder for Mathare United, disclosed that she has been battling illness for the past four months.
Wanja, one of Malkia Strikers’ most decorated players, first represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
She was part of the team that won Kenya’s seventh continental title in 2007 on home soil, where she was named the best setter.
She also served as the Malkia Strikers’ trainer during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Before her diagnosis, she was the gym instructor for the Kenya Pipeline volleyball club.
