Former national women’s volleyball team player Janet Wanja has been diagnosed with gallbladder cancer.

Her brother, Kelvin Kimani, a midfielder for Mathare United, disclosed that Wanja has been battling illness for the past four months and is currently receiving treatment in Nairobi.

Kimani appealed for emotional support and prayers for Wanja and the family during this challenging time.

“On behalf of the family, we kindly ask for your emotional support as we navigate through this difficult period, and we pray for her speedy recovery. We will provide further updates on her condition,” he added.

Wanja, one of Malkia Strikers’ most decorated players, first represented Kenya at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

She was part of the team that won Kenya’s seventh continental title in 2007 on home soil, where she was named the best setter.

She also served as the Malkia Strikers’ trainer during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Over her 15-year career with the national team, the 40-year-old has accumulated five African titles, three African Games gold medals, and a World Grand Prix win in 2015.

She also competed in five editions of the World Championships.

In addition to her role as the national team trainer, Wanja has been a gym instructor at her former club, Kenya Pipeline.
