Over 32 families in Teso North, Busia County got displaced after heavy rains and strong winds hit Amagoro, which not only destroyed houses but also destroyed crops and other properties worth millions of shillings.
The rain that started at around 7:00 p.m on Sunday, caught residents off guard, as many had to escape for safety since uprooted trees, roofs blown off, and homes flattened were the effects of the storm.
“Losing everything was done in a very short time which took us only a few minutes. It is through that loss that we are now homeless,” said Vincent Emusolo, one of the victims.
Deborah Okamimu and Lydia Osere, who made similar calls for assistance, also made an appeal to the government and philanthropists for emergency support.
Amagoro MCA Patrick Omanyala has made a plea for the county as well as the national government to provide relief materials to the families who have been displaced as soon as possible.
“These families are in need of food, shelter, and clothing without any delay. We must not leave them to suffer in the cold,” he said.
The event has once more pointed out the susceptibility of local communities to climate change-related disasters as they plead with authorities to allocate resources to disaster preparedness and response programs.
