Triple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon is among the distinguished athletes nominated for this year’s Laureus World Sports Award.

Kipyegon is in the running for the World Sportswoman of the Year award after an exceptional season, during which she made history as the first female athlete to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1500m.

The Laureus World Sports Awards, founded in 1999, is an annual event celebrating outstanding achievements in sports, recognizing both individuals and teams for their exceptional accomplishments over the past year.

The 31-year-old runner clocked an impressive 3:51.29 to secure her third Olympic title at last year’s summer games in Paris, following her previous victories in Rio de Janeiro (2016) and Tokyo (2021).

This achievement came just weeks after she broke her own world record with a stunning 3:49.04 at the Paris Diamond League.

Kipyegon’s remarkable year also saw her claim a third World Championship title in Budapest, where she triumphed in the 1500m with a time of 3:54.87.

Other nominees for the World Sportswoman of the Year award include seven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles (USA), Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan (Netherlands), four-time Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (USA), tennis star Aryanna Sabalenka (Belarus), and Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati, who won the award last year.

If Kipyegon wins the award, she would become only the second Kenyan to receive this honour, following in the footsteps of Vivian Cheruiyot, who won in 2012.

Vivian Cheruiyot won the award in 2012.

The Laureus Awards ceremony will take place on April 21 in Madrid, Spain.
