Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir has defended the Orange Democratic Movement’s approach to candidate selection, saying the party prioritizes internal democracy and consensus before resorting to direct nominations.

Speaking during an interview with CITIZEN TV, Governor Sharrif explained that ODM first encourages dialogue among members to reach agreement on candidates. Only when consensus cannot be achieved does the party proceed to formal nominations.

“Our party believes in internal democracy and the proffered method is for people to sit down and talk; the first thing we do is a consensus. If it’s not possible for us to agree, then we go for nominations,” he said.

He also dismissed criticisms from political rivals who frequently mention ODM in their statements, saying their focus on the party highlights its relevance.

“There are people out there, every single time they talk, they have to mention ODM. I can assure you one thing, if they talked about themselves no one would be listening, that’s why they have to talk about us,” Sharrif added.
