Abubakar Ali Joho, the elder brother to Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, has dismissed allegations linking him to drug trafficking, land grabbing, and the misappropriation of Sh40 billion during his brother’s tenure as Mombasa Governor.
Testifying in a Mombasa court on Friday, Abubakar said the claims, widely circulated on social media, were not only false but intended to damage his family’s reputation and sow mistrust between the Joho family and the public.“These are serious and malicious allegations that have severely tarnished my name and my family’s image,” he told the court.
Abubakar was appearing as a key witness in a case against Matilda Maodo Kinzani, who has been charged with four counts under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018. Kinzani is accused of publishing false information online that implicated Abubakar in criminal activity.
According to the prosecution, the defamatory posts falsely accused Abubakar of participating in organized crime and aiding his brother in mismanaging billions in public funds. Abubakar maintained that the allegations were baseless and designed to provoke public outrage.
The case continues as the court seeks to establish whether Kinzani’s actions constituted criminal defamation and misuse of digital platforms. If convicted, she could face hefty fines or imprisonment under the cybercrime laws. The matter has drawn significant public attention, given the Joho family’s political prominence and the serious nature of the accusations.
