The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has extended the deadline for registering senior schools as Competency Based Assessment (CBA) centres, giving schools an extra three weeks to complete the process.

The registration period, which was initially set to close on May 22, will now run until June 15 after some schools failed to register within the original timeline.

In a communication to school principals, KNEC said the extension is meant to ensure that all eligible senior schools are captured before the next phase of implementing the Competency Based Education (CBE) system.

“This is to inform you that the portal for registration of centres for Senior Schools is activated up to 15th June 2026 for centres that did not register,” KNEC said.

The registration is an important step as schools prepare to receive the first cohort of Grade 10 learners under the new education system.

Schools that successfully register will be authorised to conduct assessments, grade learners and upload results to the KNEC portal under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

KNEC has directed schools to access the registration portal using their current school code as both the username and password. Institutions are also required to upload their registration certificates before downloading and printing their registration documents for record-keeping.

The extension comes just weeks after KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere released guidelines on the transition to senior school and the implementation of assessments under CBC.

Once the registration of assessment centres is completed, KNEC is expected to open the portal for the registration of Grade 10 learners.

According to the council, details on the learner registration exercise will be communicated once the system is ready.

Grade 10 students will be registered using the Assessment Numbers they received while in Grade 3. The numbers will remain with learners throughout their journey in basic education up to Grade 12.

KNEC has asked school heads to help learners and parents understand the importance of the assessment numbers and ensure the details are accurate before registration begins.

Schools have also been instructed to verify learners’ Kenya Junior School Education Assessment performance reports before registration. The reports must be downloaded, signed and stamped by junior school heads.

Under the CBC system, learners’ final scores at senior school will be based on both classroom assessments and national examinations.

For Grades 10 and 11, the tests will make up 15% of a student’s KCBE final score each. The big exam at the end of Grade 12 counts for the rest, which is 70%.

This move is expected to help schools that were behind schedule. It will also give KNEC extra time to sign up the first Grade 10 class under the new system.
