Renowned Mugithi musician Jose Gatutura has addressed mounting criticism from fans following his recent meeting with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Gatutura was among more than a dozen artists from the Mt. Kenya region who visited the DP at his Karen office to discuss issues affecting the region, including development, the creative industry, and politics.

However, the visit sparked a wave of online backlash, with some fans accusing the artists of siding with a government that has lost popularity in the region—especially in the wake of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.

Facing a barrage of criticism on social media, Gatutura issued a statement to clarify his position.

“Regarding the trending issue about our visit to Karen, I’ve seen the negativity going around. To my fans—we’ve been on this journey together for years. You’ve supported me through every stage of my career, and I’m truly grateful,” he said.

Gatutura stressed that artists, like anyone else, have responsibilities and must take advantage of legitimate opportunities to sustain their livelihoods.

“We have bills to pay, families to support, and people who rely on us. No one offers money without expecting something in return—our service is music. It’s a business, just like any other,” he explained.

He was also keen to set the record straight about his political stance, emphasizing neutrality.

“I have fans from all walks of life, and it’s my duty to entertain everyone without bias. Attending one event doesn’t mean I support or oppose any side. Jose Gatutura is a neutral artist. I perform wherever I’m needed—whether it’s weddings, ruracios, government functions, opposition events, clubs, or public gatherings,” he said.

“Artists shouldn’t be confined to certain spaces. We don’t earn monthly salaries—this is how we make our living.”
