Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has posted new dates for its much-awaited football tournament ahead of the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa.
The development was announced in a statement released on Monday, October 7, which stated that the tournaments will be held on Thursday, October 9 to Friday, October 10 at Mbaraki Sports Grounds in Mombasa.
AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Shabana FC, and Bandari FC will battle it out in what could be a two-day extravaganza.
According to the official timetable, Bandari FC will face AFC Leopards in the opening game on Thursday at 2 p.m., and there is another match between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC at 4 p.m.
The two losing sides will then engage in a third-place playoff on Friday at noon, but the two winners will engage in the finals during the later same afternoon at 2 p.m.
The champions will also engage in an exhibition match with Chungwa FC, a special team of the ODM members and Bunge FC legislators.
The football tournament is one of a series of activities celebrating two decades of ODM’s existence. The proper anniversary event, previously planned to be held between October 10–12, has been rescheduled for November 14–16.
While issuing a statement, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed explained that the change was made to meet requests by counties which the party has not yet visited while on anniversary tour.
“We had shown under our party anniversary activities that we had not yet attained some of the counties as we received further demands and requests from counties during our Party Leader briefing,” Junet said.
The ODM has already held successful rallies in Busia, Wajir, Kisii, and Narok counties to celebrate 20 years since the party was formed.
The delay was conducted against unconfirmed reports that opposition leader Raila Odinga was hospitalized abroad reports ODM firmly dismissed as misinterpreted rumors propagated by the opposition.
