Customarily, school closures always lead to more traffic on our roads. School closures begin on the 24th of October.

NTSA has issued new ‘Road Safety Guidelines’ to prepare for the increased school traffic.

October 7th, NTSA announced they would be ‘Operation Watoto Wafike Salama’ for the 2023 season. The aim of the program is to ensure children travel safely.

For this season, NTSA has stated that children will be guaranteed safe passage home for the school holidays.

“In collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, NTSA will ensure the safety of children travelers by providing road safety education, increased road safety patrols and all the necessary road enforcement to the major roads that lead children to and from school.”

Limiting the impact of rains is very critical in the enforcement of road safety. The rains also impact children’s safety.

In that regard NTSA has outlined five safety tips in relation to children’s transport that they would like to allay the fears of parents.

Firstly, ‘Obey the traffic rules to encourage children to be responsible drivers. Secondly, In children’s transport, the driver is expected to slow down and safely distance in the presence of rain and in all driving situations.

Avoid flooded areas – Stick to the “Turn around, don’t drown” rule and stay clear of deep puddles and flooded roads.

Use seat belts – Ensure each child is strapped in.
