Members of Parliament allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have called for a thorough and impartial investigation into an alleged confrontation involving Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.
The incident, which is under investigation by security agencies, is reported to have occurred on Saturday night at a hotel in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.
The matter has drawn public attention due to the high political profiles of the two leaders.
ODM legislators have urged that the issue be handled strictly as a police matter, distancing the party from any internal involvement.
They emphasized that claims and counterclaims surrounding the incident should be subjected to due process and independently verified by law enforcement agencies.
Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, speaking on behalf of the lawmakers, said authorities must conduct an exhaustive and unbiased probe.
“We have been informed of an incident in which Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai is alleged to have attacked and threatened Embakasi East MP Babu Owino following differences over political views,” Amollo said, adding that investigations should establish the facts without political interference.
Minority Leader Millie Odhiambo called for calm and restraint, urging security agencies to handle the matter professionally. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris also appealed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to carry out a comprehensive inquiry and take appropriate action based on the findings.
Owino has linked the incident to his political stance, particularly his opposition to any political accommodation between ODM and President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election. In a statement, the MP described the incident as an unprovoked and politically motivated attack, which he said posed a threat to his life.
Alai, however, has denied the allegations, disputing claims that he drew a firearm during the encounter. He stated that the two were seated at separate tables when Owino approached him and attempted to initiate a conversation, which later became uncomfortable.
While acknowledging that he was carrying a firearm, Alai insisted he did not draw it or threaten the MP, calling on investigators to rely on available video footage.
Kilimani OCPD Patricia Yegon confirmed that both leaders have recorded statements and that police are reviewing CCTV footage from the scene as investigations continue.
