Nairobi County has ordered the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket outlets within its jurisdiction due to the sale of expired products.

The directive was issued by the Nairobi County Health Committee following inspections that uncovered expired items, including Daima yoghurt, on the shelves at the Naivas Moi Avenue branch, as well as products lacking clear expiry dates, posing health risks to consumers.

The committee, led by MCA Maurice Ochieng, also raised concerns that many staff members handling food products had not undergone mandatory medical testing and certification.

Consequently, the closure will remain in effect until all Naivas staff are medically tested and certified fit to handle food, and until the supermarket completes thorough product testing and obtains clearance certificates.

This decision affects numerous Naivas branches across Nairobi, disrupting operations of one of Kenya’s largest retail chains.

The county emphasized that the closure aims to protect public health and urged other retailers to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Naivas has yet to respond publicly to the closure order
