Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering quality and affordable homes for Kenyans, following a detailed inspection of the Mukuru Social Housing project in Nairobi County.
The ambitious development, situated in one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, is set to deliver 13,248 modern housing units under the government’s Boma Yangu affordable housing program.
Once completed, the project will offer a mix of 5,616 studio apartments, 3,024 one-bedroom units, and 4,608 two-bedroom apartments—catering to diverse household sizes and income levels.
Speaking during the visit, PS Hinga highlighted the transformative impact the project will have on urban housing, noting that the development is designed not just to provide shelter, but to build inclusive, dignified communities.“This is more than a housing project,” said Hinga. “We are building spaces where people can live with dignity, access key services, and be part of thriving communities.”
The project also includes a range of essential amenities aimed at enhancing residents’ quality of life. These features include high-speed lifts for vertical mobility, refuse chutes for efficient waste disposal, a spacious central courtyard for community gatherings, sewer connections to support public health, and designated parking areas for both residents and visitors.
PS Hinga emphasized that such developments are integral to the government’s broader urban renewal strategy, which seeks to upgrade informal settlements with sustainable infrastructure and services. The Mukuru project, he noted, exemplifies a people-first approach that integrates housing with vital urban services.
As Kenya’s urban population continues to rise, the government is intensifying efforts to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. The Mukuru Social Housing project is expected to significantly improve the living conditions for thousands of Nairobi residents once complete, serving as a model for similar developments across the country.
The initiative aligns with President William Ruto’s administration’s agenda of creating inclusive and resilient cities through affordable housing, job creation, and social equity.
