More than 50 pedestrians were arrested on Wednesday after they allegedly failed to use the Allsops footbridge along Thika Road.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said the operation targeted people crossing the busy highway at undesignated points despite the presence of a footbridge.
The authority said those arrested will be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.
“Over 50 pedestrians have been arrested and will be charged at Milimani Law Courts for failing to use the footbridge and obstructing the free flow of traffic,” NTSA said.
The agency warned that crossing highways outside designated areas puts lives at risk and endangers other road users.
“Crossing roads at undesignated points not only endangers their lives but also puts other road users at risk and disrupts traffic flow,” the authority added.
The latest arrests are part of an ongoing enforcement campaign that NTSA launched on July 20 to curb unsafe road crossing and reduce pedestrian deaths.
According to the authority, pedestrians remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for about 38 per cent of all road traffic fatalities in the country.
NTSA has urged members of the public to use footbridges and other designated crossing points, saying the move is aimed at saving lives and improving safety on Kenyan roads.
