The government has taken a significant step toward improving football infrastructure after Cabinet Secretaries Salim Mvurya and Wycliffe Oparanya conducted a technical assessment of a proposed modern training facility for AFC Leopards at the Karen Technical Institute for the Deaf in Nairobi.
The planned project seeks to transform the institution’s grounds into a state-of-the-art football training complex that will serve both AFC Leopards SC and community football clubs across Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
Speaking after the inspection, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the assessment follows a formal request by AFC Leopards to President William Ruto for support in developing a dedicated training ground.
“This afternoon, alongside my colleague Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, we conducted a technical assessment of the proposed upgrade of the Karen Technical Institute for the Deaf grounds in Nairobi into a modern football training ground,” Mvurya said.
He noted that the upgraded facility will not only provide AFC Leopards with a permanent training base but will also be accessible to grassroots football clubs, helping to expand opportunities for young players.
“The facility is envisioned to serve not only AFC Leopards SC but also community football clubs within Nairobi and its environs,” he added.
According to Mvurya, the project is expected to enhance talent identification, nurturing and development by providing aspiring footballers with access to quality training infrastructure.
The Sports CS said investing in modern sports facilities remains a key pillar of the government’s strategy to promote youth empowerment, develop sporting talent and raise the standards of football in Kenya.
If implemented, the project is expected to strengthen grassroots football while providing one of Kenya’s oldest football clubs with a modern training environment to support player development and improve competitiveness.
The proposed facility also aligns with the government’s broader agenda of upgrading sports infrastructure across the country to create more opportunities for athletes and position Kenya as a regional sporting powerhouse.
