Principal Secretary for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, on Monday chaired a wrap-up meeting with KfW Development Bank at Maji House to review progress on key irrigation initiatives and chart the way forward for strategic programmes.

The meeting brought together officials from the State Department for Irrigation, KfW, Equity Bank Group, and the National Treasury.

Discussions focused on assessing the implementation of ongoing programmes, strengthening coordination, and streamlining processes to improve efficiency and impact—particularly in Marsabit County, following last week’s KfW field visit.

Participants emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to deliver sustainable water and irrigation solutions that enhance livelihoods and resilience in arid and semi-arid areas.

The meeting also explored opportunities to expand the Smallholder Irrigation Programme to Western Kenya and to deepen partnerships in implementing the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan.

These efforts are expected to broaden access to irrigation services, boost agricultural productivity, and strengthen food security across the country.

PS Kimotho provided an update on the Feedlot Programme, which aims to establish 450 feedlots—one in each ward—starting with arid and semi-arid counties.

The initiative integrates irrigation development, including supporting infrastructure such as water pans, some of which are currently underway in Wajir.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment among government agencies and development partners to coordinated investment and sustainable development in Kenya’s irrigation sector.
