Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has raised alarm over what he describes as deliberate attempts to divide the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 29, Mwangangi cautioned opposition leaders to remain vigilant, claiming that their political detractors could sponsor multiple presidential candidates to fragment their unity and weaken their electoral strength.

“The pressure from Kenyans will ensure the opposition stays united,” Mwangangi said, emphasizing that disunity within the opposition would face widespread public condemnation.

He warned opposition leaders against abandoning the unity pact, saying, “Any opposition leader who chooses to run away from unity will face the wrath of Kenyans.”

The Deputy Governor further stressed the need for leaders to put aside personal interests and focus on the greater national goal of unseating President William Ruto in 2027.

“There is little room for political egos. The opposition will have no choice other than to remain united,” he added.

Mwangangi’s remarks come on the heels of a high-stakes strategy meeting in Nairobi, where top opposition figures including Fred Matiang’i, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa discussed a united front for 2027.

The meeting marked Matiang’i’s first public appearance alongside Gachagua’s camp, effectively ending speculation surrounding his political stance since his return from the United States.

Other prominent figures in attendance included Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP’s Martha Karua, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, Mukhisa Kituyi, and former Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.

Sources close to the opposition coalition revealed that this was the first in a series of consultations aimed at building a broad-based national alliance to challenge President Ruto in the next election.
