A fresh political storm has erupted within the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after Njeri Maina accused former United Democratic Alliance Secretary-General Cleophas Malala of plotting to divide supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The accusations emerged after the Kirinyaga County woman representative claimed Malala held a late-night meeting with a section of Members of the County Assembly allied to Anne Waiguru at a hotel in Kenol, Kirinyaga County.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, the first-term legislator alleged that the meeting was aimed at forming a splinter group to undermine leaders loyal to Gachagua in the county.

Maina further claimed that Malala facilitated the MCAs who attended the meeting with KSh20,000 each, money she alleged had been sourced from individuals seeking to derail the political agenda of Gachagua and his allies.

“I am aware that you met a section of MCAs allied to Governor Anne Waiguru in Kenol. The agenda was to create a splinter group to fight the foot soldiers of H.E. Rigathi Gachagua,” Maina said.

The outspoken legislator also accused Malala of previously soliciting money while serving as secretary-general in his former party, warning that she would publicly challenge him over the alleged activities.

“Bring it on. You shall face off with me where the rubber meets the road,” she declared in the statement.

However, Malala appeared to dismiss the claims, saying his meeting with Kirinyaga MCAs was part of routine political consultations ahead of discussions with Gachagua.

In a response posted online, the former senator said the engagements were meant to strengthen unity within the party and prepare for the next general election.

“Yesterday evening, I had fruitful consultative engagements with elected members of the County Assembly of Kirinyaga ahead of today’s meeting with our Party Leader H.E. Rigathi Gachagua,” Malala said.

“We are focused on enhancing political inclusivity as we prepare for the forthcoming general election. Chama iko imara. We scatter none but gather all,” he added.

The exchange highlights growing tensions within political circles allied to Gachagua as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
