The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, has highlighted Kenya’s progress and long-term vision in the water and sanitation sector during a High-Level Preparatory Meeting for the 2026 United Nations Water Conference held in Dakar, Senegal.

CS Mugaa attended the meeting alongside Kenya’s Ambassador to Senegal, Ann Kisaka Nangulu, Director Eng. Mary Wamaitha, Director Gladys Wekesa, Mr. Alex Manyasi, and Mr. Mamadou Diallo from the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC).

The meeting comes at a critical moment as the global community, particularly African nations, reflect on the future of water, sanitation, and sustainable development amid growing climate and population pressures.

In his address, CS Mugaa outlined Kenya’s progress towards achieving water and sanitation targets, citing the implementation of strong policy frameworks, increased investments, and strategic infrastructure partnerships as key drivers of improvement.

He noted that while the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals remain a central focus, Kenya is already planning beyond the deadline to ensure sustainability and resilience in the sector.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the need for sustained post-2030 investments, greater private sector participation, integration of climate considerations, and strengthened community stewardship to guarantee lasting access to safe water and sanitation services.

Kenya, he said, remains committed to advancing inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable water solutions, while working closely with regional and global partners to shape outcomes at the 2026 UN Water Conference.

The preparatory meeting is expected to inform key priorities and commitments ahead of the global conference, which will bring together governments, development partners, and stakeholders to accelerate action on water and sanitation worldwide.
