Democratic leader Justin Muturi has strongly condemned the killing of two people in Ishiara, Mbeere North, after police allegedly opened fire on demonstrators protesting the state of healthcare services.
In a statement issued with what he described as “deep pain and anger,” Muturi termed the incident personal, noting that the victims were residents of his home area who had taken to the streets peacefully to demand improved services at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
He criticized the use of force by security officers, saying the protesters were unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
“This is not the Kenya we should be building. A nation where citizens are gunned down for demanding basic services is a nation drifting dangerously off course,’ he said in a statement he shared on social media.
The former Speaker questioned who authorized the operation and why citizens demanding basic services were treated as enemies, warning that such actions risk pushing the country in a dangerous direction.
Muturi further pointed to what he described as a growing crisis in the health sector at the county level, saying the deterioration of services is now triggering unrest among frustrated residents.
He called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable without delay.
