Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly condemned Nairobi County’s act of dumping garbage outside Kenya Power’s Stima Plaza headquarters, terming it as “primitive and unacceptable.”

Speaking on Thursday, Murkomen criticized the incident, stating that it went against the responsibilities of the county government, which is tasked with ensuring public health and maintaining a clean environment for city residents.

“That was the most primitive thing anyone can ever do. It is unacceptable. The county government of Nairobi has the responsibility to keep everyone safe and ensure public health standards are maintained. Dumping waste recklessly only exposes people to diseases like cholera,” said Murkomen.

The CS assured Kenyans that the National Police Service (NPS) had responded swiftly to the incident. He revealed that a formal report was made by Kenya Power and led to the arrest of several Nairobi County officials for questioning. Additionally, some county garbage trucks involved in the act were impounded.

“From day one, the National Police Service took action. Some county officers have been arrested, and their lorries detained at the police station,” he confirmed.

Murkomen added that his ministry, in collaboration with the NPS, is compiling a detailed report on the matter, which will be presented to Parliament for further action. He acknowledged that the information might not have been available during a recent parliamentary debate but assured that the government remains committed to holding those responsible accountable.

The CS warned that such actions undermine governance and the rule of law, emphasizing that government institutions must act responsibly.

“A government cannot behave like a criminal gang and expect citizens to obey the law. That should never happen, and we regret that it did. We will take action at every level to ensure those who planned and executed this act are charged in a court of law,” he stated.

The incident has sparked widespread debate over the state of governance in Nairobi, with Murkomen’s remarks signaling the national government’s firm stance against lawlessness and misuse of public office
