President William ruto arrived in Addis Ababa for the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union assembly. in this meeting African leaders are set to deliberate on key issues in shaping Africa’s future, including institutional reforms, climate action and regional integration.

The President, in a statement, noted that the summit seeks to reform the African Union and enhance its effectiveness ensuring long term financial sustainability. He emphasised that the discussions will advance the continent’s position on climate action, adaptation, resilience and finance that remain s the top most priorities as Africa continues to face climate-related challenges.

The head of state also highlighted that the engagements will help mobilise greater support for the country’s national transformation agenda especially in agro-industrial growth, infrastructure development and expanded irrigation and energy sector.

On the sidelies of the summit, Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Dr Deborah Barasa held high level meetings with African Union officials led by AUC Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment Moses Vilakati ahead of a key sitting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), which was chaired by President Ruto.

The consultative talks reviewed Africa’s preparedness for the upcoming CAHOSCC meeting themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” reinforcing Kenya’s role in shaping Africa’s climate diplomacy and sustainable development agenda.
