Water Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa has held talks with a World Bank delegation on the implementation and financing of major water, sanitation and irrigation projects aimed at improving access to clean water and strengthening food security in Kenya.

The meeting, held in Nairobi, brought together Mugaa and a World Bank team led by Dominick de Waal, a Senior Economist in the institution’s Water Global Practice, and Victor Vazquez, a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist.

Discussions focused on the World Bank’s project portfolio within the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, including ongoing programmes targeting groundwater development, bulk water supply and sanitation infrastructure.

Among the initiatives discussed was the Horn of Africa Groundwater Resilience Programme, which seeks to strengthen groundwater resources in the region, alongside major water infrastructure projects such as Mwache Dam.

The discussions also covered the Kenya Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (K-WASH) Programme and the Water and Sanitation Development Project (WSDP), which are among the initiatives supported through development partnerships to expand water and sanitation services.

Mugaa said the World Bank had remained an important development partner in financing infrastructure projects designed to address Kenya’s water and sanitation challenges.

“The World Bank has played a key role through funding the expansion and development of key water, sanitation and irrigation projects in Kenya that aim at increasing access to clean, safe water, dignified sanitation and promoting food security,” Mugaa said.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that continued collaboration with development partners was important in advancing projects that support sustainable water management, improve sanitation services and expand irrigation capacity.

The engagement comes as Kenya continues to pursue investments in water infrastructure to address water shortages, improve service delivery and support agricultural production.

Through programmes targeting groundwater resilience, bulk water systems and sanitation facilities, the government is seeking to strengthen the country’s capacity to provide reliable water services to households, institutions and businesses.

The discussions are expected to support continued coordination between the ministry and the World Bank on the implementation of projects within the institution’s water sector portfolio.
