Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has cautioned Kenyan youth to exercise greater responsibility in their use of social media, warning that digital recklessness could jeopardize their future.

Speaking at a public forum, Mudavadi acknowledged the transformative role that technology and social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram play in creating opportunities and enabling creativity.

However, he expressed growing concern over global trends pointing to increased scrutiny and calls for tighter regulation of online spaces.

“I want to encourage the young people of our country that embracing the use of social media is appreciated,” said Mudavadi. “But what we are seeing when it comes to the changes taking place across the globe should be a wake-up call on how they relate and interact on those platforms.”

He warned that while social media has opened doors, it has also created space for harmful practices, including gender-based violence, cyberbullying, and exploitation. Mudavadi called on both users and regulators to be proactive in curbing these dangers.

“I am telling the youth to be more reasonable and at the same time very careful on how they engage on social media,” he added, stressing the long-term consequences of online conduct.

Referencing recent tragedies linked to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), the Prime Cabinet Secretary urged society to take a firmer stance, advocating for aggressive policies to address the rising threat of technologically facilitated gender-based violence.

Despite the challenges, Mudavadi commended disciplined and focused youth as the true drivers of Kenya’s future. He urged them not to squander their potential through actions that could haunt them later in life.

“We must not allow social media to be a breeding ground for pain and regret. It should be a platform for growth, learning and positive engagement,” he said.
